I will often get asked what’s the best way to start a good fitness training program, and my answer is always the same — it depends on what you are looking for. Regardless of what you are trying to accomplish, there has to be a certain amount of balance, but there are different areas to focus on depending on what you hope to achieve.

One of my friends came to me recently and said he wanted to “get big.” I knew what he meant, but I decided to mess with him a bit and suggested that he go and eat a bunch of Ding Dongs and Potato Chips. He was not amused, so I told him that he would need a fitness training program that incorporated the use of heavy weights and protein supplements. I told him he would need to have something to feed his muscle growth, and that was what he needed, and it worked. Within a few months, he was pretty “big,” and very satisfied with what he had accomplished.

Another friend of mine asked if I could help design a fitness training program for him that would allow him to tone up and get lean. He is a few pounds overweight, so I incorporated a weight loss plan into his fitness training program and then had him do cardiovascular exercises along with weight training that used lower weights and more reps. This type of workout allows a person to become firm and muscular without getting really big.

Within a about a month, he had trimmed down and toned up and said he was feeling much better. He had stuck to the program religiously and was working on a six pack on his abdomen, and could not have been happier. For him, the best fitness training program was much different than my other friend’s, but they both accomplished what they were setting out to do.

I had one friend that came to me and asked about a fitness training program that would speed up her metabolism. I created a diet plan for her as well that incorporated four to six smaller meals per day along with an early-morning workout. I informed her that working out first thing will help rev up her metabolism and that studies have shown that people who work out in the morning usually stick to it more than other people. She, too, was happy with the results.

When it comes to starting a good fitness training program, it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. There are many approaches a person can take, and the best thing to do is just ask a personal trainer or dietitian.
